Karl Lagerfeld, fondly known as Kaiser, has often been disgruntled by photographers’ flashes popping around him like a field of marauding fireflies, everywhere and wherever he goes. However Fendi’s Creative Director himself moved behind the lens in 1987 and from that time on he has created all the advertising campaigns for Fendi. Over the decades, Lagerfeld has published several books on photography that experimented with the nude figure, with city streets and scenes, fashion models, celebrities and still-life amongst others. He has, in fact, acquired a name for himself in the world of photography as he has as a designer of fantasy collections and is known for the same precision in photography as in designing clothing. His technical skills and use of lighting in the compositions seen here are used to perfection to create a mood of mystery, romance and innocence.

This current campaign shot by Lagerfeld has been titled Roma, La Notte. It features images shot in the evocative streets set in the heart of Rome creating the period before Dolce Vita and the advent of the paparazzi. “I cannot see life without the vision of a photographer anymore. I see the world and fashion through a lens,” says Lagerfeld. “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.”
