Rashid Rana, the Pakistani artist known for his complex works that use the phenomenon of pixilation, is back in town with his two-gallery show Apposite Opposite at Chemould Prescott Road and Chatterjee & Lal. This is the second time the artist is showing dually at these galleries. “He is an artist with both galleries and has done a similar show for us in 2007. He helped us sort and select which works could be on display in which space so that it goes in line with the theme and the concept with the show,” said gallerist Mortimer Chatterjee.

In the series, Rana takes us through the relationship between the larger image and its constituent elements, leading us to meditate about part and whole, surface and depth, fragment and meaning. Enthralling!

On view at Chemould Prescott Road and Chatterjee & Lal till May 25, 2012.

ART FOR A CAUSE
On a vibrant summer afternoon, at the Art to Heart benefit sale at ARTISANS, Kala Ghoda, professionally curated quilts were on display. These rarely seen, boldly patterned designs were either created or had been handed down through generations to the Kala Raksha artisans from Kutch. Some were created using textiles that have been within their families for decades.

Modestly priced, these quilts had a vintage appeal and the proceeds from the sales were intended to help the immediate medical needs of one member of the artist community. Verve was a partner for this self-help project, a brainchild of Artisans director Radhi Parekh and Kala Raksha’s project director Judy Frater. It was heartwarming to see the artisans part with their most intimate household possessions as they shared their knowledge with the city’s swish set that included Meera Chauhan, Anu Mafatlal, Rupa Chinai, Sangita Kathiwada, amongst others who attended the benefit sale that lasted for five days.
